Switched receptacle wiring

All lighting switch boxes have a "neutral" or grounded conductor. This is the white wire that ends on your outlet. Even if you're using a half-hot outlet for lighting or anything else, you need to have a neutral wire in your switch box. Your power could come into either your outlet box or to your switch box.

Is a switched outlet different from regular outlet?

Most of the outlets in your home are of the duplex variety—that is, you can plug two devices into them at one time. A half-hot (or switched) outlet is a duplex outlet that has one half permanently "on," or ready to provide electricity, while the other half can be turned off and on via an ordinary wall switch.

Why are switched outlets upside down?

Easier to Identify Switched Outlets Electricians may position the outlet in an upside-down position so that you can quickly identify the switch-controlled receptacle. Since it stands out visually to most people right away – it provides convenience to the occupants to easily remember which outlet is switch controlled.
